Illustrator Workflow Tricks I Wish I'd Learned Sooner

Shortcuts and practices that have saved me time and peace of mind.

I used to look at seasoned designers with awe at how quickly and seamlessly they could create a polished, clean project in Illustrator without needing 15 hours to spare.

Over time, I realized it wasn't magic that allowed these designers to create magnificent, consistent layouts. It was practice and mastery.

Here are some tricks that I use to enhance my workflow.

The Alignment Properties are something I learned later in my practice, but they have been extremely useful — not only in everyday designs, but especially with preparing artwork, where alignment is critical. They ensure items are centered or placed exactly as intended.

If you have multiple item selections, you can ensure proportional spacing. Toggling rulers is also an excellent way to quickly and accurately measure distance and size.

Outline mode has been especially helpful. It helps you see the raw shape you are working with and easily highlights potential issues with a file, such as unnecessary layer items, skewing, or other discrepancies.

To toggle outline mode: Ctrl + Y (Cmd + Y on Mac)

Shape Builder has become second nature for combining and carving shapes on the fly. Instead of manually redrawing overlapping paths, I can just click-drag to merge or Alt+click to subtract — way faster for building icons, badges, or custom shapes from primitives.
